DAY 2: HILLWOOD ESTATE/WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL
In 1955 Marjorie Merriweather Post bought Hillwood and soon decided her home would be a museum that would inspire and educate the public. Embark on a journey to Mount Vernon, the historic estate of George Washington. After exploring the mansion, take a guided landscape tour to appreciate Washington’s work as an amateur landscape architect. In the years between the Revolutionary War and his presidency, he devoted himself to designing the estate’s gardens and panoramic vistas, shaping the land with great care and vision. Conclude your visit with a memorable lunch at the Mount Vernon Inn, where you’ll share a meal with James Anderson, Washington’s farm manager. B, L
