DAY 3– OLD CITY OF JAFFA/CHURCH OF ST. PETER/CAESAREA/ACCO/NAZARETH
After a satisfying breakfast, we begin our day at the Old City of Jaffa. Here we will see the Church of St Peter and the location of the house of Simon the Tanner. We then continue to Caesarea Maritima, the Roman city on the Mediterranean coast. Caesarea was given to King Herod as a present by Augustus Caesar and is also named after him. Herod built a massive port there alongside entertainment facilities, bathhouses and temples. Caesarea was the home of Cornelius, whom the Lord used to begin the spread of the gospel to the Gentiles. From there we travel to Acco, the most well preserved city from the Crusades. Afterwards we tour Nazareth, where we visit the Church of Annunciation and Mary’s Well. Not far from Nazareth is Cana, where Jesus performed his first miracle of turning water into wine. It is here where we will also visit the Church of the Wedding Feast at Cana. B, D
DAY 4–SEA OF GALILEE/CAPERNAUM/BETHSAIDA/MOUNT OF BEATITUDES
After breakfast at our hotel, we start the day with a boat ride on the famous Sea of Galilee. We travel from Capernaum, the place where Jesus lived during much of his ministry in the Galilee, performing many miracles. Our next stop is the nearby Tabgha, noted as the location for several chapters in Jesus’ ministry. Here we will visit the Church of the Primacy of St. Peter. Later, we journey to the area of Bethsaida, which was referred to in the New Testament in conjunction with two of Jesus’ miracles: healing the blind man and the feeding of 5,000 followers. We then continue to Mount of Beatitudes, site of the Lord’s Sermon on the Mount. Here we enjoy a stunning view of the Sea of Galilee. Afterwards, we travel to Chorazim, one of the cities that Jesus cursed. Our next stop is Kurzi, located on the eastern side of Sea of Galilee, where Jesus cast out an unclean spirit of a possessed man. Before travelling to our hotel, we visit Mount Tabor and the spectacular Church of Transfiguration. B, D
DAY 5–JERICHO/MOUNT OF TEMPTATION/JESUS’ BAPTISMAL SITE
Today enjoy breakfast at our hotel and start our journey south. Our first stop will be Beit Shean, which has played an important role throughout the history due to its geographical location. It was on the gates of this city that the bodies of King Saul and his sons were hanged after their death. Several impressive buildings have been uncovered, including a theatre, a public bath-house, two magnificent colonnaded streets, a Roman temple and much more. The city was destroyed in a large earthquake in 749. We continue our travels via the Jordan valley that will take us to Jericho, the oldest city in the world. Here we will see the old Sycamore tree and explore Jericho. Afterwards, we take a cable car ride to the Mount of Temptation. Our last stop before going to our hotel will be Kasr el Yehud, the baptismal site of Jesus as performed by John. This is also where the Israelites crossed the Jordan River to the Promised Land. B, D
DAY 6–DEAD SEA/EIN GEDI/AHAVA®/QUMRAN
After breakfast we have the option to swim in the famous Dead Sea, an expansive salt lake bordered by Jordan on the east and Israel on the west. Its surface and shores are remarkably 1,412 feet below sea level, making it the lowest elevation on earth. From here we continue to Ein Gedi, the largest oasis along the barren western shore of the Dead Sea. The abundant springs and steady year-round temperatures created perfect growing conditions in ancient times. Here we take the opportunity to visit AHAVA® Dead Sea Laboratories, a cosmetics company that manufactures skin-care products made of mud and minerals from the Dead Sea. Finally, before heading to Jerusalem we visit Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in 1947. On our way to Jerusalem we will see the Old Jericho road and also visit the Inn of the Good Samaritan. B, D
DAY 7–MOUNT OF OLIVES/PALM SUNDAY ROUTE/GETHSEMANE
Starting our day with breakfast, we begin our journey today at the Mount of Olives. From the 3rd Century B.C., this location has served as one of the main burial grounds for the city. Here we visit Bethany (tomb of Lazarus) and the village of Bethphage which is remembered as the starting point of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. We will walk the Palm Sunday route down to the Garden of Gethsemane, site of Jesus’ arrest to his trial and crucifixion. At the Pool of Bethesda, we will also see where Jesus cured a frail man of his ailments. From here we walk along the Via Dolorosa, the “Way of Grief” that Jesus endured on his way to his Crucifixion. This route ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the holiest sites in all of Christianity. This is believed to be where Jesus was buried and resurrected. Our travels though the Old City of Jerusalem will allow us to explore the Christian and Muslim quarters. B, D
DAY 8– OLD CITY OF JERUSALEM/TEMPLE MOUNT/WESTERN WALL/ROOM OF THE LAST SUPPER
Today begins with a visit to the Temple Mount, a holy site in the Old City. The Temple Mount is a flat plaza surrounding by retaining walls, including the Western Wall, which is considered the holiest place where Jewish people may pray. The Western Wall, also referred to as the “Wailing Wall”, is an ancient limestone wall originally built by King Herod. After our visit to the Jewish quarter and the Western Wall Tunnels , we will walk via the Armenian quarter to Mount Zion, just outside the walls of the Old City. Here we will experience many sites of note including The Room of the Last Supper known as the Cenacle of Jesus, King David’s Tomb and Caiaphas’ House including the Dungeon. As we walk toward the bottom of Mount Zion, we will come upon the City of David, speculated to be the core of ancient Jerusalem. We conclude today’s tour of the Old City by viewing Hezekiah’s tunnel, also known as the Siloam Tunnel, a water tunnel carved beneath the City of David during ancient times. B, D
DAY 9–BETHLEHEM/ CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY/JERUSALEM
After breakfast we spend the morning in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus situated about six miles south of Jerusalem. Here we will visit Shepherd’s Fields, the area to the east of the city traditionally believed to be the area where shepherds were “keeping watch o’er their flocks by night”. The Church of Nativity, the oldest complete church in the Christian world, is also located here. A silver star in the floor marks the spot where Christ is believed to have been born. Our last stop will be the Milk Grotto, an irregular grotto hollowed out of soft white rock. According to tradition, while Mary and Joseph were fleeing Herod’s soldiers on their way to Egypt, they stopped in this cave while Mary nursed the baby Jesus. We return to Jerusalem for free time in its Old City. Tonight we will enjoy a farewell dinner to reflect upon our holy journey. B, D
