DAY 1—WELCOME TO WASHINGTON, DC
Welcome to Washington, D.C. – our Nation’s Capital! The adventure begins with a private dessert reception where we will get to know our fellow travelers and Discoveries Director.
DAY 2—MEMORIALS TOUR/SMITHSONIAN MUSEUMS
The morning begins with a guided tour of some of Washington’s most iconic landmarks – including the Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln Memorials. Included is a stop at the World War II Memorial, which honors the 16 million who served in the armed forces, and all who supported the war effort from home. You will then have the entire afternoon to explore any of the Smithsonian Museums located along the National Mall at your leisure – perhaps the Museum of American History, Air and Space Museum, or the new African American Museum is calling your name today. “Unpack and stay” for the next four nights at the Fairfax at Embassy Row. Full of Old World charm, the hotel is tucked away in D.C.’s DuPont Circle Neighborhood, with plenty of sites and restaurants with-in walking distance. B, D
DAY 3—ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY/MOUNT VERNON
We’ll head across the Potomac River this morning to view some of the most revered grave sites in America at Arlington National Cemetery. Your guided tour includes multiple hop-off stops, including the Eternal Flame for President John F. Kennedy, and a chance to see the humble Changing of the Guard. Spend the entire afternoon at historic Mount Vernon, the Virginia plantation of George Washington, and his wife, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington. See the beautifully restored rooms inside the mansion, walk amongst the gardens of the estate situated on a hill overlooking the Potomac River, and pay homage to the first President of the United States at his humble tomb. The site will come to life at lunch as you exclusively dine with a costumed interpreter from the Revolutionary period. Also included is a boat cruise on the Potomac River for the April departure or a special garden walking tour of Mount Vernon for the September departure. B, L
DAY 4—LINCOLN’S COTTAGE/HOLOCAUST MUSEUM/MONUMENTS AT NIGHT
Did you know Abraham Lincoln moved out of the White House during the summer to a quieter location on the outskirts of the city? We’ll take you on a guided tour of “President Lincoln’s Cottage”, one of the original “Summer White Houses” – a 34-room Greek Revival structure – and a true ‘off the beaten path’ attraction that many who visit DC don’t ever get to experience. You can even touch the same hand railings as our 16th President. Returning to the city center, relax during lunch in Historic Georgetown. Then, spend the afternoon at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This living memorial to the Holocaust inspires visitors to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. After dinner on your own, we re-group for a guided tour to see more of DC’s monuments at night – it will give us a whole new perspective. B, L
DAY 5—WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL/MORE SMITHSONIAN MUSEUMS
This morning, visit the beautiful architecture and grounds of the Washington National Cathedral. A docent-led tour highlights the inspiring stained-glass windows, Gothic spires, and flying buttresses of this national treasure. Because part of just one day isn’t enough to take in all that interests travelers at the Smithsonian, we return to the National Mall for an afternoon of self-exploration at your museum of choice. Don’t forget to take in the Renick Galley, the historic Smithsonian Institution Building (built in 1849!), or perhaps the National Museum of Natural History. Dinner will be at the iconic Filomena’s Restaurant in Georgetown... recommended by one of our travelers for their windows where you can watch the chef make fresh pasta! B, D
DAY 6—U.S. CAPITOL TOUR/FAREWELL LUNCHEON
Our final morning in Washington begins with a guided tour of the U.S. Capitol and its stunning rotunda. Be impressed with the statues and marble columns as you walk down the same hallowed halls that our country’s lawmakers have since 1800. A special “farewell” lunch at the historic Gadsby’s Tavern in Alexandria wraps up our time together. Head home – with visions of our Nation’s Capital fresh in our minds and hearts. B, L
