DAY 1–MONDAY, OCTOBER 8—HORICON MARSH/JOHN DEERE TRACTORS/STURGEON DECOYS
Welcome! Today we’ll meet your Discoveries Director and fellow travelers for a welcome breakfast and send off by local Historian John Gurda*. We’ll start our tour at the Hilton Garden Inn Park Place, located just northwest of Milwaukee.
Board our deluxe motorcoach and travel to the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge for a narrated boat tour*. While at the marsh, we’ll observe geese and other birds and animals in their natural habitat and enjoy its fall glory. Before leaving Horicon, we’ll meet Jim Bandsma*, a retired John Deere employee and tractor collector.
Next, it’s on to Fond du Lac, for a visit with Mary Lou Schneider* and her sturgeon decoys. As one of the most important elements in sturgeon-spearing, decoys can be anything from brightly-painted carved wooden fish or simple items such as corn cobs. Afterwards, we travel to Wisconsin Rapids for the night at the full-service Hotel Mead, located just steps from the Wisconsin River. Meals: B, L
DAY 2–TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9—GLACIAL LAKE CRANBERRIES/RUBI REDS/RIB MOUNTAIN/ LEINENKUGEL’S
A stay in Wisconsin Rapids is not complete without a visit to a cranberry bog. Glacial Lake Cranberries* has been producing cranberries since 1873. This unique property is located on the north shore of the former Glacial Lake Wisconsin. Having disappeared thousands of years ago, the remnants of this lake created some of the finest wetlands in the state. The high water table, available sand, and acid soil conditions make the area perfect for cultivating this Thanksgiving staple. Later, visit Rubi Reds* for all your cranberry product favorites from dried cranberries, to sauces, salsas and other gourmet foods and gifts.
Not far from Wisconsin Rapids is Wausau. We’ll enjoy a delightful lunch at Back When Café* and a visit to Rib Mountain State Park*. You’ll take in the beauty of the fall colors from the overlooks, and if you’re willing, the observation tower. Next “on tap” is a tour of the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co.®*, infamous as a symbol for the Northwoods’ Wisconsin life style.
See firsthand how award-winning beers are made in this old-world Germanic brewery dating back over 140 years. We spend the next 2 evenings in Eau Claire. Meals: B, L
DAY 3–WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10—MARIEKE GOUDA/AROUND THE CORNER TAPING/KUBB/JOHN MCGIVERN
This morning, we travel to Thorp for breakfast on the farm at Marieke Gouda, an award winning cheesemaker and family run farm. After breakfast, learn more about the farm and how their cows are making delicious cheeses. Next, we return to Eau Claire for a game of Kubb, an old Nordic game. Eau Claire is the official Kubb Capital of North America and home to the U.S. National Kubb Championship.
Then, it’s a highlight of our trip—the filming of an episode to air in Season 8 of Around the Corner with John McGivern™! We’ll meet John for lunch and see how the cast and crew create the show that you’ve come to know and love.
Return to the hotel to relax and freshen up a bit. Later, we’ll have a special performance given by John just for our group. Get ready to laugh as you experience Around the Corner with John McGivern™ in person— another highlight you’ll be sure to remember. Meals: B, L, D
DAY 4–THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11—CIRCUS WORLD MUSEUM/ FAREWELL LUNCH
Many may remember the Circus Parade held each July in Milwaukee. Today, relive some of that excitement with a visit to Circus World Museum* in Baraboo. Site of the original Ringling winter quarters, you’ll see historic circus wagons, memorabilia and more. Finally, a delicious farewell luncheon is served at Log Cabin Restaurant and Bakery*. Save room for a tasty piece of pie. Meals: B, L
